Adding and Subtracting Integers: Rules

1. Double negative = positive

Ex. 5 - (-3)

= 5 + 3

= 8

2. A negative and positive = negative

Ex. 7 + (-2)

= 7 - 2

= 5

Tips

  • Often removing brackets helps.
  • Sometimes grouping all of the negatives helps.

Ex. 5 + (-3) - (-4) - (+2) + (-7) + (+1)

= 5 - 3 + 4 - 2 - 7 + 1

= 10 - 12

= 2
